About

The Big Sur Marathon takes place on California State Route 1 near Big Sur, California, in late April, along a coastal road lined with cliffs that drop straight into the Pacific Ocean. Several distances let runners choose a format suited to their level: the full marathon (26.2 miles), a marathon relay, a 21-miler, an 11-miler, a 7.5-mile event and a 5K (3.1 miles). The stretch of coast is exposed, so wind and cool fog are common, and a course that follows hills will punish a fast start. It is wise to bring layers for the wait and to plan pacing around the climbs.
