The John Colter Run starts at Missouri Headwaters State Park in Three Forks, Montana, on a course that mixes paved sections, gravel, and rugged trail over about 7.5 miles, including notable river crossings, most memorably through the Gallatin River, that add a genuine wilderness feel to the race.
Runners have to clear specific obstacles, including sections of mud and water, or risk disqualification. Awards go to the top overall finishers as well as standout performances in various categories. A post-race gathering follows, with food and live music for everyone to enjoy.
