About

The Dipsea Race is a 7.4-mile (11.9 km) trail race finishing at Stinson Beach in Marin County, north of San Francisco, California, held on June 13, 2027. Founded in 1905, it is considered the oldest trail race still run in America.

What sets it apart is its handicap system: head starts are based on each runner's age and gender, so in theory any participant can win the overall title, whatever their ability. The course opens with 688 steps climbed in a row before heading onto the wild trails of Mount Tamalpais up to the high point known as Cardiac Hill, then dropping beneath a canopy of redwoods.

Local tradition even allows runners to take unmarked shortcuts through the brush. The technical descent of Steep Ravine draws plenty of spectators before the finish on the beach.
