The Mount Hood Nutcracker Challenge

The Mount Hood Nutcracker Challenge is held in Melrose, Massachusetts, on December 12, 2026. Two options start together at 12:00 PM: a 3.5 Mile cross-country run (5.6 km) over the Mount Hood Golf Club, and a non-competitive 2 Mile Walk (3.2 km). Runners can enter individually or as part of a team, with awards in both categories.

Cross-country over a golf course means grass, undulating ground and turns rather than the steady rhythm of a road race, so pace by effort instead of by watch and expect splits slower than your road 5K equivalent. Shoes with some grip help on a December surface that may be soft. The event raises money for local causes including Housing Families, Inc. and the Melrose High School cross-country teams, and the midday start makes it an easy race to fit into a Saturday.
