The Surfside Beach Marathon & Half Marathon takes place in Freeport, Texas, in the second half of February, with courses run entirely on sand. The marathon (26.2 miles) and half marathon (13.1 miles) start at 7:30 a.m., followed by a kids' run of about 0.6 miles at 8:00 a.m. and the Surfin' Surfside 10K (6.2 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles) at 8:15 a.m.

Participants enjoy the beach scenery and post-race refreshments. A virtual option lets people who cannot attend sign up from anywhere and receive their race materials by mail. The event takes place no matter what. Running on sand is slower and harder on the calves and ankles than pavement, so shorten your goal pace and consider a training run on soft surfaces beforehand. Sun and wind off the Gulf of Mexico can be strong even in February.
