About
The Madeline Island Marathon and Half Marathon takes place on Madeline Island, one of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior, Wisconsin, in mid-May. The marathon (26.2 miles) and half marathon (13.1 miles) offer a unique running experience on a USATF-certified loop course, and the marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier, which draws serious runners looking for a quality race.
Both courses follow paved roads with a few miles of packed gravel, pass through the quiet forests of the island and give glimpses of the shoreline. The field is small, and because the roads are open, the organizers stress vigilance and discipline from runners. Afterward, participants gather by the lake for a barbecue with local beers, live music and awards. Lake Superior keeps the air cool, so bring layers.
