About

The Loud Thunder 50 takes place in Illinois City, Illinois, in mid-April, on forest paths and trails. Three distances are offered: a 50-mile race with about 7,350 feet of climbing, a 50K (31.1 miles) with about 4,000 feet and a half marathon (13 miles) with about 1,900 feet. Wooded trails in the Midwest can be soft and muddy after spring rain, so shoes with good traction and a plan for slower, more cautious footing are worthwhile. The three-way menu lets ultrarunners tackle the full 50 miles while newer trail runners choose the half marathon in the same woods.
