About

The Leonide j Lemire 4.9 road race in Southbridge is a long-standing Independence Day tradition: a scenic 4.9-mile road race (7.9 km) organized with the local VFW, held on July 4, 2027 with an 8:00 a.m. start. It starts and finishes at the local YMCA, and the course passes various monuments and memorials honoring veterans.

The race was created in honor of Lemire, a Southbridge native killed at Pearl Harbor. The event features age-group prizes, raffles and refreshments, and proceeds benefit the YMCA's membership program for service members and veterans. The race is accessible to wheelchair athletes, and facilities are made available even though the YMCA is usually closed on holidays.
