About

The Franklin Mountains Trail Runs take place in El Paso, Texas, in late January, in Franklin Mountains State Park. The weekend offers a 30K (about 17 miles), a 55K (about 34 miles), a 12-hour event, a half marathon (about 13.7 miles), a 10K (6.2 miles) and a 5K (3.1 miles). The longer races and the 12-hour run start on the first day and the shorter ones on the second.

Runners climb from the desert floor toward North Franklin Peak, which reaches about 7,190 feet, with views toward Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and the Mexican border. The terrain is rugged, in the largest mountain range within the state of Texas. The area also holds remains of the only tin mining operation in the United States. Expect rocky footing, little shade and sun exposure even in winter, so carry enough fluids and wear shoes made for technical trail.
