The Fort Bragg Whale Run and Walk takes place in Fort Bragg, California, in the second half of March, and opens the Whale Festival. The half marathon (13.1 miles) starts at 7:30 a.m., the 10K (6.2 miles) at 8:00 a.m., a 5K run and a 5K fun walk at 8:30 a.m. and a kiddie race of about a quarter mile at 7:45 a.m.

The Soroptimists of Fort Bragg organize the event, set against sandy beaches and redwoods beside the Pacific. A newly built coastal path at Noyo Headlands Park gives views along the shoreline for runners and spectators. The festival that follows includes craft fairs, whale-watching tours and concerts. Only service dogs are allowed on the course. Coastal Northern California in March is cool and often breezy, so layers are advisable.
