On September 29, 2026, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) released the number every BQ runner had been refreshing their inbox for: the 2027 Boston Marathon cutoff is 5:17. To earn a bib for the 131st Boston Marathon on Monday, April 19, 2027 (Patriots' Day), hitting your qualifying time wasn't enough. You had to beat it by at least 5 minutes and 17 seconds.
For men 18-34, whose standard is 2:55:00, that meant running 2:49:43 or faster. According to the Boston Globe, it's the first time the toughest cutoff mark in the race has dipped under 2:50. For women 18-34, the real number was 3:19:43 against a 3:25:00 standard.
How 2027 registration worked
Qualifier registration ran Monday, September 14 through Friday, September 18, 2026, closing at 5:00 p.m. ET. It isn't first-come, first-served and it isn't a lottery: the B.A.A. verifies every qualifying time, ranks applicants by how far under their age-group standard they ran, and accepts the fastest until the qualifier spots are filled. The margin of the last runner accepted becomes the cutoff.
The 2027 qualifying window opened on September 13, 2025. Acceptance and non-acceptance emails started going out on September 29, and registration for 2027 will not reopen.
The 2027 numbers
| 2027 Boston Marathon | Number |
|---|---|
| Qualifier applications | 33,649 (129 countries, all 50 states) |
| Accepted on time (5:17 or more under standard) | 24,630 |
| Accepted through the random selection | about 1,000 |
| Total qualifiers accepted | 25,630, a record |
| Qualifiers not accepted | 8,019 |
| Field size | 30,000 |
The rest of the 30,000 bibs go to invitational entrants: the Official Charity Program, invited pros, and Para athletes. For context, the B.A.A. received 33,267 qualifier applications for 2026, so demand keeps growing even under tougher standards.
The on-time field breaks down into 13,898 men, 10,641 women and 91 non-binary runners from 120 countries, ages 18 to 84, including 10,745 first-time Boston runners and 1,498 Massachusetts residents. The most popular qualifier? Boston itself: 4,448 accepted runners used their 2026 Boston time, followed by Chicago 2025 (2,043), New York 2025 (826) and CIM 2025 (812).
"To earn a spot into this race takes dedication and resiliency," B.A.A. President and CEO Jack Fleming said in the announcement.
What changed for 2027
1. A lottery for BQ runners who missed the cutoff. The big news, announced July 22, 2026, is the Boston Qualifier Selection: roughly 1,000 entries drawn at random from applicants who beat their standard but not the cutoff. No separate sign-up, eligibility is automatic. This year, 9,019 applicants fell in that gap (33,649 applications minus 24,630 on-time acceptances), which works out to about an 11% chance of being drawn. Nice safety net, not a plan.
2. Net-downhill courses now get a time adjustment. For the first time, qualifying times from steep downhill courses are indexed:
| Net elevation drop | Adjustment |
|---|---|
| 1,500 to 2,999 ft | +5:00 |
| 3,000 to 5,999 ft | +10:00 |
| 6,000 ft or more | not accepted for qualifying |
That matters in the US, where some popular BQ races are run on steep net-downhill courses. The B.A.A. accepted 240 qualifying times from net-downhill courses for 2027.
3. The BQ standards themselves didn't move. The 2027 qualifying times are identical to 2026. The real squeeze came a year earlier, when the B.A.A. made every age group under 60 five minutes faster for the 2026 race.

Qualifying for Boston 2028: window, standards and cushion
The 132nd Boston Marathon is set for Monday, April 17, 2028. Here's what's official so far:
- The 2028 qualifying window opened September 19, 2026, the day after 2027 registration closed, and stays open through 2028 registration week in September 2027. Exact registration dates will be announced after the 2027 race.
- 2028 BQ standards are the same as 2027, per the B.A.A. Only the downhill-course adjustments may still change before registration.
- The 2028 cutoff is unknown. The B.A.A. never predicts it; it depends on how many people apply.
Over the last three races, the cutoff has ranged from 4:34 to 6:51. Running right at your standard almost guarantees you'll be on the outside looking in, barring a lucky draw. A practical rule: build in at least a 7-minute cushion, ideally 10. For a man 40-44 (3:05 standard), that means targeting 2:58 (6:47/mi) or even 2:55 (6:40/mi). For a woman 45-49 (3:45 standard), aim for 3:38 to 3:35.
Second rule: give yourself two shots. A fall 2026 or spring 2027 marathon leaves room for a backup race before September 2027 if race day goes sideways. Don't bet everything on a summer marathon, where heat can easily cost you several minutes.
Not sure where your fitness is? Plug a recent 10K or half into our race time predictor to see what marathon time it projects. If the gap to your target is more than a few minutes, you need a real training block: our Boston Marathon qualifying time training plan is built around your BQ standard. And don't give back minutes in the last 48 hours: our guide to what to eat before a marathon covers carb loading and race-morning breakfast.
If Boston 2028 is your goal, RunRun can build your marathon plan from your current fitness and target time, then adjust your workouts week by week based on the sessions you actually complete. A 7- to 10-minute cushion is built over months, so every workout should count.
