The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon (1897) and one of the six World Marathon Majors. It runs on Patriots' Day, the third Monday in April, from Hopkinton to Boylston Street on a rolling course famous for the Newton Hills and Heartbreak Hill at mile 20.

Over 30,000 runners take part, most of them qualified with a time standard — the coveted “BQ” — earned at another marathon.
