About

The Virginia Creeper Marathon takes place in Abingdon, Virginia, in the first half of April, along the scenic Virginia Creeper Trail, a former railroad with a flat, gently graded profile. This is a single-distance event, the marathon (26.2 miles), starting at 8:00 AM. The course is well supported, with aid stations serving drinks and homemade snacks. Several turnarounds give spectators easy access to the course, which creates an encouraging atmosphere. Awards go to the top runners in various age groups, so the race has a competitive side while keeping a relaxed, community feel. A gentle grade can still add up over 26 miles, so practice even pacing.
