About

The Trail & Marcha La Senda del Oro takes place in Pino del Oro, a small village in the province of Zamora, in the Aliste district, a few kilometres from the Portuguese border. The municipality lies within the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, where the river cuts deep granite canyons. The event is run by the Pino del Oro Youth Association, with technical support from the timing company SmartChip. The walk has been going for several years, and the trail race was added in 2024. The day takes place on Holy Saturday, during the Easter break, and draws runners from all over Spain and neighbouring Portugal, with close to 300 entries at the latest edition.

The long trail covers 20 km with around 750 m of elevation gain and starts at 9:45 am from the town hall square, which is also where it finishes. Its demanding, technical route drops towards the Duero gorges and crosses the Pino bridge before climbing back up to the village. There is a cut-off at the aid station two hours after the start, and the course closes four hours after the gun. The short trail, 10 km with about 380 m of climbing, sets off at 10:15 am; it suits runners wanting to discover the Arribes on a more accessible format, with a two-hour time limit. Young people aged 15 to 17 can take part with parental consent.

A non-timed walk of about 7 km starts at 10:00 am, with no bib or ranking, for those who would rather take in the scenery at their own pace. Walkers have up to three hours to complete it.

The setting alone is worth the trip. The Requejo bridge, known locally as the Pino bridge, is an iron viaduct opened in 1914 and designed by engineer José Eugenio Ribera: its 120-metre arch spans the Duero almost 90 metres above the water. The village's name, meanwhile, recalls Roman-era gold mining, still visible at the El Picón site and along a waymarked archaeological trail. After the race, an optional meal is offered to participants and the friends and family who come with them.

Registration is online via the SmartChip website, until a few days before the event and subject to availability; there are no entries on the day. Bibs can be collected the evening before or on race morning at the town hall library. The long trail has two drinks stations and one food station, the short trail one full aid station, and a final one awaits everyone at the finish. No cups are provided. Mandatory kit includes a mobile phone, a foil blanket, a whistle, at least 500 ml of fluid capacity and trail shoes.
