The Winter Green Man Ultra

The Winter Green Man Ultra takes place on 6 March 2027, starting from Bristol, England. Two trail ultras are on the programme: the GMU45, covering 72.4 km (45 miles), starts at 07:00, and the GMU30, covering 48.3 km (30 miles), sets off at 10:00. The elevation gain figures published for the two routes are inconsistent and are worth checking with the organisers before building a training plan.

A winter version of an established event, the race falls at a time of year when English paths are often waterlogged: choice of shoes and protection from the cold matter as much as fitness. The GMU30 is a sensible first ultra for a runner stepping up from the half marathon or marathon, with a three-hour long run as the key session. The GMU45 is aimed at experienced runners able to stay on the move for eight hours or more and to manage their fuelling during the race.
