The Varmint Half Marathon & 5K takes place in Burkes Garden, a high mountain valley in Tazewell County, Southwest Virginia. Founded in 1992 by race director Charity Hurst, the event offers a half marathon (13.1 miles) and a 5K run/walk, both starting at 8:00 a.m. from the Burkes Garden Community Center.

The course runs through and around Burkes Garden, known for its rolling hills and its sheep, a nod to the local legend of the coyote that gave the race its name. All proceeds and donations benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
