The Sundance to Spearfish Marathon takes place on September 12, 2027, finishing in Spearfish. Its USATF-certified marathon course (26.2 miles / 42.2 km) drops nearly 3,000 feet (914 m), making it one of the fastest marathons in the region.

The first 12 miles or so (19 km) follow groomed gravel roads between Cement Ridge and Savoy, descending about 1,600 feet (489 m) through mountain meadows, valleys and canyons and passing the Dances with Wolves filming location at mile 9.3 (km 14.9). The final 14 miles or so (22 km) continue on the paved Spearfish Canyon Highway (Route 14A), a National Scenic Byway, dropping another 1,365 feet (416 m) into Spearfish. A Boston Marathon qualifier that counts for either Wyoming or South Dakota, runner's choice, the course is built for speed and scenery.
