Nitro Trail Half Marathon

The Nitro Trail Half Marathon takes place in Pinole, California, in late May, at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline Park, and is organized by Brazen Racing. The half marathon (13.1 miles) starts at 8:30 a.m. and is a scenic two-loop trail course, with a 10K at 8:45 a.m. and a 5K at 9:00 a.m. for those wanting a shorter distance.

The route follows unpaved fire roads, opens onto wide views of the bay and passes through eucalyptus groves. Several water stops are provided, and a time limit applies to participants. Fire roads are generally smoother than singletrack, but they are still dirt, so a trail-oriented shoe and a slightly relaxed pace are reasonable choices. Bay Area shoreline mornings can be cool and windy.
