About
Mount Marathon Race is held on July 2, 2027, in Seward, Alaska. It is one of the state's best-known mountain races: a single course straight up the mountainside and back down again, with the climb and the descent making up almost the whole of it. Distances and start times in our records are unreliable for this event; treat the official site as the reference.
An up-and-down mountain race is two entirely different disciplines in one morning. The climb is a hiking test — hands on knees, breathing at your limit, no shame in walking every step. The descent is a nerve test, and it is where the race is won and lost: practise running down steep, loose ground before entering, because doing it for the first time on race day is how people get hurt.
