About

The Memorial Day Hero Salute takes place in Houston, Texas, in late May, and pays tribute to people who have served their country. The half marathon (13.1 miles) starts early, at 6:00 a.m., while the 10K, the 5K and two shorter challenges, the Murph (about 2.0 miles) and the Loredo (about 1.5 miles), go off at 7:15 a.m.

Children aged 10 and under can take part in a mini salute, which includes a quarter-mile run and basic exercises. The day also features community activities such as a tug-of-war contest. All participants receive custom shirts and medals, and the top performers earn awards. Houston is humid by late May, which is probably why the half starts before sunrise heat builds; hydrate well the day before.
