Five kilometres underground is the defining feature and the thing to prepare for: the tunnel is unlit and cold, so a head torch is essential and the temperature drop arrives in the first half hour of the race. Beyond it, the course descends — which flatters the clock but loads the quadriceps, so put two or three downhill long runs into the weeks beforehand rather than trusting a flat training block.
