The Horseshoe Lake Trail Run takes place in La Honda, California, in mid-April, in the Skyline Ridge, Long Ridge and Russian Ridge preserves, mostly along the Bay Area Ridge Trail. Runners enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Cruz Mountains along the way. The 30K (18.6 miles) and the half marathon (13.1 miles) both start at 8:00 AM, and a 5-mile run follows at 8:15 AM. Ridge trails mean sustained climbs and exposure to wind and changeable coastal weather, so a light jacket for the start and enough water for the longer distances are good choices.
