About
GTLC Luxembourg is a winter trail race starting from Vianden, a small town in the Our valley on the German border, and heading out to explore the Éislek, the Luxembourg part of the Ardennes. It is organised by GTLC Events, the Belgian team behind the Grand Trail des Lacs & Châteaux, which runs its concept across several events through the year. The idea is to tell the story of a region through running: forests, deep valleys, villages and four castles, from Vianden to Esch-sur-Sûre. All five distances, from 21 to 106 km, are run on the same Saturday in late February and start from the Larei cultural centre in the heart of Vianden.
The GTL100, 106.3 km with 4,291 m of ascent, sets off at 5:00, still in darkness. It passes the castles of Bourscheid and Brandenbourg, pushes on to Esch-sur-Sûre and its castle perched above the old town, then loops back to Vianden; nine aid stations line a course that is around 85% trail, capped at 200 runners. The GTL75, 81.7 km and 3,359 m of climbing, starts at 7:00 and also takes in Bourscheid and Brandenbourg, with seven aid stations and a 15-hour limit.
The GTL50 covers 48.4 km and 1,939 m of ascent, starting at 9:30 with four aid stations and ten hours to finish: a first step into ultra distance over terrain that rarely lets up. The GTL35, 37.3 km and 1,481 m of climbing, starts at 11:00 with three aid stations and a seven-hour limit. The shortest, the GTL20, offers 21.2 km and 951 m of ascent from 12:30, on a route that is 95% trail and dotted with views of Vianden castle, with one aid station and four hours allowed.
Staggered starts bring runners back to the finish through the afternoon and evening. The challenge comes as much from the season as from the ground: short, steep climbs over slate ridges, slippery descents to the rivers, mud, cold and short days that make a head torch essential on the longer distances. The 75 and 100 km routes are aimed at experienced ultra runners, while the 20 and 35 km suit runners already used to climbing. The GPX track for each course is made available before race day.
Vianden is overlooked by its imposing restored medieval castle, and the house where Victor Hugo stayed in exile recalls the writer's ties with the town. Further west, the Sûre winds its way to the Upper Sûre lake, ringed with trails and viewpoints. Entries are handled on the Passion for Sports platform, with a group option from ten people, and live tracking runs through the LIVIO app. Public transport is free throughout the Grand Duchy, so Vianden can be reached without a car and the trip easily extended with a few days in the Éislek.
