ORRRC Turkey Hunt Map & Compass Challenge

ORRRC Turkey Hunt Map & Compass Challenge is held in Springfield, Ohio, on November 15, 2026, with a 5K-distance challenge (3.1 miles) starting at 2:00 PM. The format is a map-and-compass event rather than a conventional race, and entry is free for ORRRC members.

Because navigation is part of the game, this is a different kind of 5K. Speed helps, but reading the map well and choosing a sensible route matter just as much, so a strong runner who rushes past a control point can lose to a slower one who reads the terrain carefully. If you've never tried an orienteering-style event, it's a low-pressure way to start: bring shoes you don't mind getting muddy, expect to move off pavement, and keep the compass in hand rather than in a pocket. For experienced runners it makes a nice change of rhythm from road racing, and the afternoon start leaves the morning free.
