Off-road footing changes what a 5K asks of you: turns, uneven ground and short pitches count for more than flat-out speed, and your splits will read slower than a road time without the effort being any easier. Wear shoes with some grip, shorten your stride on anything technical, and if you can, move two or three of your weekly runs onto unpaved ground in the month beforehand. Beyond that the distance is friendly, and most people can run-walk it comfortably.
